Hoodia Desert Lodge
Sossusvlei

Accommodation
The Hoodia Desert Lodge team attach considerable importance to its informal atmosphere, attention to detail and exquisite cuisine.

Twelve freestanding, en-suite chalets offer guests plenty of room and maximum privacy. The main building houses a beautiful pool, viewing platform, bar, restaurant and a comfortable lounge with an open fireplace where guests can sit back and relax.

Location
The lodge sits surrounded by majestic mountains on the banks of the Tsauchab River, just 20 minutes from the Sesriem Gate, entrance to the world-famous red dunes of Sossusvlei. The distance from main gate to dunes (Dead Vlei) is 65 km on asphalt; the last 5 km is deep sand and only suitable for 4x4 vehicles. Guests of the lodge can book a guided excursion to the dunes in the lodge’s own 4x4.

Sossusvlei is the area most associated with Namibia: Red dunes as far as the eye can see (up to 380 m high, coloured red by the clay-rich sand) and dead trees in the Vleis or pans decaying slowly at the will of the arid climate. The Vleis were created by the Tsauchab River, which probably once flowed to the Atlantic some 50 km away. The whole Sossusvlei region is quenched with water during those very rare years when a good amount of rain falls, prompting bushes and flowers to spring up everywhere.

Wildlife
Sossusvlei is situated within the Namib Naukluft National Park. The region is home to several well-adapted desert-dwelling animals, including springbok, oryx, ostrich, and countless other small creatures. Guests have also been known to spot cheetah, so keep your eyes peeled.

Activities
The lodge offers full-day excursions to Sossusvlei’s dunes, the Dead Vlei and the Sesriem Canyon – including a substantial breakfast in the dessert. This is included in the rate.

Guided treks in the nearby Naukluft Mountains (and the natural spring water pools) are also available. An evening sundowner drive offers guests the opportunity to take in the spectacular scenery while enjoying an ice-cold G & T.
